Anuradhapura
The oldest capital, and still a place of pilgrimage rather than a monument.
Anuradhapura was the seat of Sinhalese power for over a thousand years and remains one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world. The Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under — has been tended continuously since the third century BC. The site is enormous and scattered; a driver and a guide make the difference between a highlight and a hot afternoon.
