Dambulla

Five cave temples cut into a rock face, painted end to end, still in daily use.

The Golden Temple of Dambulla is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka — five caves under an overhanging rock, filled with more than 150 Buddha images and painted across every surface. It is a working temple, not a ruin, so shoulders and knees stay covered and shoes come off at the gate.
