Galle
A Dutch walled town on a promontory, still lived in, best walked at dusk.
Galle Fort is a 17th-century Dutch fortification that has never stopped being a town: ramparts you can walk right round, streets of merchants' houses now holding galleries, jewellers and small hotels, a lighthouse, a mosque and a Dutch Reformed church within a few hundred metres of each other. Stay inside the walls if you can.
