Ceylon Slow

10 days / 9 nightsPrivate vehicle and driver-guideKandy to Galle, mostly uphill and then down to the sea

This is the route for people who would rather stay three nights somewhere than one. It climbs from Kandy into the tea districts, spends its middle days between estates and mountain towns, and finishes inside the walls of Galle Fort.

The train is part of it — the section between Nanu Oya and Ella is the reason many people come — but so are the mornings that follow: mist in the valley, a walk between plantations, tea picked and rolled by the people who grow it. Afternoons are deliberately empty.

Ten days is a comfortable length for this route. It also works at twelve, with more time in the hills, or at eight if you would rather not linger.

  • The hill country line from Nanu Oya to Ella, in an unhurried carriage
  • Two nights among working tea estates around Hatton
  • Evening drumming at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
  • Walks between plantations, waterfalls and the Ella gap
  • A final stretch inside Galle Fort, with the sea on three sides

Arrive and drive to Kandy

Met at the airport and driven inland to Kandy, around three hours depending on traffic. The lake walk in the evening is short and worth doing before anything else.

Kandy

Kandy

A morning at the Temple of the Tooth, arriving for the drumming rather than after it, and then the botanical gardens at Peradeniya, which are large enough to lose an afternoon in. There is a working craft quarter in the town if you would rather see things…

Up into the tea districts

The road climbs steadily, and the temperature drops with it. By early afternoon you are among estates, with the reservoir below and the ridge of Adam's Peak in the distance on a clear day.

Hatton

Hatton

A day on the estates: how the leaf is picked, withered, rolled and graded, explained by people who do it. Afterwards there are walks between the plantings, and a waterfall or two that most itineraries drive past.

Hatton → Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya

A short drive to the coldest town in the country, where colonial hedges and racecourse fences sit at 1,900 metres. Mornings here are genuinely cold. Horton Plains and World's End can be added as a pre-dawn start if you want the walk.

The train to Ella

The section people come for. Around four hours by rail through tea gardens, tunnels and open valley, with the vehicle meeting you at Ella station. Reserved seats where the schedule allows; otherwise second class with the doors open.

Ella

Little Adam's Peak before breakfast is short and easy; Ella Rock is longer and steeper. Either way the afternoon is free, which in Ella usually means a long lunch and the view from wherever you are staying.

Down to the coast

A long descent out of the hills and across to the south coast, broken up along the way. Galle Fort in the late afternoon, when the light is on the ramparts and the heat has gone.

Galle

A morning walking the fort with someone who can explain the Dutch, Portuguese and British layers stacked inside the walls, then an afternoon on the beach at Unawatuna or Dalawella, whichever is calmer that week.

Onward

A last breakfast, and then the expressway north to the airport — around two and a half hours. If your flight is late there is time for a stop on the way.
