The Essential Sri Lanka
This is the shape of a first trip to Sri Lanka. It starts north of Colombo, crosses the cultural triangle, climbs into tea country, comes down through a national park and finishes on the south coast — a loop that takes in most of what the island is known for without moving every night.
The pacing matters more than the list. Sigiriya is climbed early, before the heat and the queues. The hill country section is travelled partly by train. The last few days are deliberately unstructured, because by then most people want them to be.
Twelve days is comfortable for this route rather than rushed. It can be shortened to ten by dropping one of the coastal nights, or stretched well past two weeks by staying longer in the places you like.
