The elephant orphanage on the Kandy road — worth a conversation before you book it.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was founded in 1975 for orphaned and injured elephants and is on almost every classic itinerary, usually as a stop between the airport and Sigiriya or Kandy. Standards of elephant tourism have moved on since then, and we would rather talk you through the alternatives — Udawalawe's Elephant Transit Home, or wild herds at Minneriya and Udawalawe — than put it in a plan by default.
