Wilpattu National Park

The oldest and largest park — dense forest, natural lakes, and far fewer vehicles.

Wilpattu is named for the villus, natural sand-rimmed lakes scattered through thick secondary forest. It is the oldest and largest national park in Sri Lanka and, because it was closed for much of the civil war, remains quiet. Leopards are here in numbers; sightings take more patience than at Yala, and feel entirely different when they come.
